My special place

Our friend Jeffrey is holding a contest where two lucky winners will win a print of his artwork. He takes incredible nature pictures that I believe will one day be worth a lot of money. He is acutely aware of the beauty that surrounds him everywhere he is whether it is the backwoods of Oregon or the city streets of New York. His blog site is www.upsidedownbackwards.blogspot.com. You should check out his work. I love it. However...back to the topic at hand...to win the contest, one must comment about his/her favorite place in America. I thought about it and although I loved the sunset in Key West, Navy Pier in Chicago, the view from Ellis Island in New York, the blue berry patches in upstate New York, the mountains that surround Convict Lake in California, the neon lights of the Las Vegas strip, the red rock of St. George, the battlefields of Williamsburg, the old farms in Rexburg, Idaho, 16th street in Colorado, the snowy front at Alta, the incredible view from Highway 1 in California....nothing compares to the serenity I find at Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon. The waterfall may not be spectacular to the average onlooker, but I am not the average onlooker. I have hiked the well beaten trail that leads to the waterfall with almost every guest I have ever invited to Provo. This place has been my special place since I was a freshman at BYU. It was the place I ran to on bad days. It was the place I went to think and write in my journal. I love the cool mist that sprays my back. I love the feel of ice cold water running over my toes. I love to watch people's faces as they see the waterfall for the first time up close. There is nothing like it. It only takes 10 minutes to hike to and from the waterfall, you can see cars speeding quickly by to get to more exciting places such as Park City. I have been with people who don't even look to their right as they drive by this magnificent place as they drive by. I always wonder how they can miss it. It is a special place away from the cars and loud sounds. It is quiet and peaceful. And I love it. Tim said his favorite place is the ballpark. I thought this was the perfect answer for him. He didn't specify which ballpark. He said you can create memories in any ballpark. Pray do tell...where is your favorite place in America?

  1. I've hiked to Bridal Veil Falls several times too and would have to agree that it is fabulous. Our friends own a cabin in Sundance so we spent a lot of time there as children.

I would have to say that my very favorite place is Canyon Lake in Arizona at about 4am just as the sunrises and we pull out in our waterskiing boat. Its the best!

  2. hmmmm...I'd have to do some serious thinking to decide on my top favorite. There's so many enchanting places in this country! I'm like you and have been around and seen lots. Although I sheepishly admit that of the time I spent in Provo I never once went to Bridal Veil...passed by it I'm sure but never stopped. How does that happen over 2 years, I don't know.

  3. thanks for the compliments! i just realized that i never answered the question at hand on marta's blog - but now that you ask, i'd have to say yachats (yaw-hots) oregon, although boston gets a close 2nd place. yachats is a small town on the oregon coast and my family has been going there every 2 or 3 years for some time now. it's absolutely beautiful.

  5. Janine,
I can't wait for you to come and visit! It will be oh-so nice to see you and your both of your sweethearts!

My favorite place? Missouri in the fall, it's a riot of colorful leaves. One day it's summer and swelteringly humid, the next morning there's a crispness in the air, and snap....it's autumn!
