monday morning chatter

Does anyone else find it difficult to tie colorful eggs into the real meaning of Easter? I did until last year when I heard a good friend relate an interesting analogy of the eggs and the Atonement. His five minute connection has helped me look at silly Easter traditions a little differently.

Like eggs, we all start out clean and perfect but little by little we get scratched and marked, whether by our own doing or the result of someone else, and we get a little discolored. We are no longer perfect. However, it is not impossible to be clean again. All we need to do is break the colorful shell and reveal the white inside. The cracking is not easy. Sometimes it's a tedious process, just like repentance and forgiveness. But it is possible to be white and clean again because of Jesus Christ. He can take away the scratches, bruises, pain. We just need to take part in the Atonement which He invites everyone to do when He says, "Come unto me."

I am the first to admit that I do not fully understand the sacrifice of our Savior Jesus Christ. But I do believe He can heal me and smooth out my rough edges. I thought about Him a lot yesterday as we painted the eggs and tried to teach Mya the basics behind Easter. Of course she enjoyed the chocolate and gifts the Easter Bunny left for her, but by the end of the night I do think she understood that Easter meant a lot more than eggs and bunnies.

  1. My son's school have a travelling cross at Easter and Nativity scene at Chirstmas. You take them out with a candle, prayer book and a story about the true meaning of each. Each child in the class gets to take it home in the lead up to each, discuss it with their family and say their own prayer of thanks. I think it's a lovely idea.Rx
