There is an invisible prenuptial agreement somewhere with imaginary scribbled signatures from both Tim and me which states, "If either the husband or wife gains more than 25 lbs. from the wedding date, guilty party agrees to a trial separation on the couch until he/she loses weight." Thankfully, we have never had to enforce the trial separation although Tim playfully threatens to kick me to the couch during pregnancy because he said we never discussed any clauses to the agreement. (I think he justs want the bed to himself since I am a terrible sleeper during pregnancy. I toss and turn relentlessly.)
Joking aside, two dear friends of mine called me last week to tell me they were separating from their respective husbands. The news came as quite a surprise and rocked my socks off. I listened to their stories and wondered how in the world I could help. I've had that same question swimming around my head all week, and I finally decided to ask you for advice.
My one friend has already contacted a lawyer and knows divorce looms in the future. Neither she or her husband is willing to budge on a couple of key issues and a permanent split seems inevitable. My other friend is not even considering divorce. However, she is participating in this trial separation in hopes that it will produce a positive outcome. As we talked, we asked each other how it would be possible to make separation a positive and good experience.

ReplyDeleteLast June, my husband and I decided to part ways. We were both struggling with how to approach a marriage that had become more like being with a not so friendly roommate. Paperwork was filed and the courts ask for 3 months of separation before a divorce is finalized.
I went through about every emotion in the book. Anger, sadness, indifference, and yes...even happiness. A very close friend of mine happened to be going through a very similar experience - and she ended up moving in to the home I had only ever shared with my husband. We would spend many nights talking, venting, laughing, and crying. It was just a relief to know we weren't alone.
But at night, when all was dark and it was just me and my thoughts - it was unbearable. How did two Christians who agreed at the beginning that divorce was never an option...how did those two people come to a point that it seemed to be the only option? How did someone I loved so much - not want to live with me anymore? I spent that first month blaming him. It was his fault. He wanted out. He had changed. He was too immature. He was the one with the issues. I wasn't perfect...but I made it easy on him right? I did the wife bit pretty good (or so I thought). I did laundry, I cleaned, I cooked. I let him go out for guys night.
After a few deep discussions with my boss (I think you know him quite well). I tried a different approach. What did I not like about myself (in regards to our marriage). I couldn't change him...but I could change myself. Did I want this marriage to end? yes? no? That was a hard decision. I knew once I was honest with myself, there was no going back. I decided I wanted to fight. Fight hard for what I knew we could have together. Fight for changes in me...and not blame him for everything.
It was hard...very hard. He fought back...very hard. He didn't want to save the marriage. He had made his decision and he wasn't going to budge.
Then one day - I got a call. He was sick...very sick. Couldn't move. His family was busy...and he had no one else to call. So, I drove down and took him to the hospital. I spent the day with him as he went through tests to find out what was wrong. We got to talk. I got to hold his hand. I took him to his apartment and as I was about to leave - he broke down. "I can't do this any longer. I need you. I want you to be here for me. I want you to be the one who take care of me for the rest of my life."
Two days before our divorce was final - he went to the courthouse and ended the proceedings...and a few weeks later he was back HOME. We understand each other better. We communicate better. We both desire to be better people on our own...to have a better marriage. We have been to the "dark side" - we tasted that emptiness...and know the bitterness that goes along with it.
I know this is long. I guess my advice is that it is VERY possible for a separation to be a positive experience. It's about learning who you are. Scrubbing away all that doesn't matter...and getting down to the basics. When it came down to it...I knew I couldn't spend the rest of my days without him by my side....but I couldn't push that onto him...he had to come to that conclusion on his own. We were covered in prayers by friends and family - and I know there was Someone who lead us through step by step, through the pain and eventually to the joy.

A friend of mine recently went through a trial separation, and both he and his wife did not want to get divorced - they both felt they had just run out of things to try so they could fix their relationship. He spent the first few weeks doing single-guy things - all the stuff he couldn't do/felt too guilty to do when he was with his wife (mountain bike weekend away with friends, late nights at work, going to the gym, working on his bike, etc.). She on the other hand, wallowed, hated every time she heard he was doing something fun, and figured he'd never come back to her. I think my advice is, definitely explore and try and enjoy life - you'll be much happier as a person and therefore as a partner, but also spend time SHOWING that you're still committed to making it work (phoning, dating, making an effort to remember the good things about the other person). How to balance such new-found freedom with a committed relationship is anyone's guess, but I wish all parties involved the best of luck for a happier life, whether that's together or apart. x

a lot of times people feel that seperation really means to be away from each other and being given a chance to see other people. if anything, it should be a time to just give each other space to think about key issues that they are going through. they should seek a marriage counselor who can really coach them through these issues.
ReplyDeletethese are just my words of advice having witnessed my parents divorce. it is good to focus on one issue at a time. have both people think about what really is the underlying issue and try to fix it through words. go on dates once every week or two weeks to have time to talk about what that one issue is and then the next date will be talking about the next issue.
the main thing i can say is take time. nothing can be fixed in one day. feelings need to be healed.

As we're waiting for our papers to come in the mail, I've sat and asked myself if there's any way we could save our marriage but to be honest the lack of trust is just the final nail in our coffin.

ReplyDeleteI think that this is one of those things that is much easier to prevent than it is to fix once the damage has been done. That's not to say that it can't be fixed. The other day my husband and I were talking about how we need to work harder to put each other's needs above our own. I think this is one of (I know there are many) the reasons for divorce. Life happens, goals are made and when the honeymoon phase wears off we stop putting that other person first in everything, the way that we used to. It requires a constant vigilance to maintain a happy marriage and is not an easy job, but a worthwhile one.
Once there are hurt feelings and it feels like things are just terribly broken I can only imagine the pain and betrayal that a person must feel. In that case I can only think of some advice that Chris and I were given when we got married "A great marriage requires two great forgivers" and maybe a little time and distance can make that kind of forgiving easier.

for one of my classes in college I had to sit through 2 hrs of family court. it was all divorce stuff...who gets what/who wasn't paying child support/etc. it isn't the easy way out! sitting through that made me never want to go through it.

Wow! Some really interesting thoughts. My partner and I separated and it lasted four years! We were both full of anger and blame that things weren't working as well as they always had and we were both very tired and busy (new baby, new jobs, new house away from friends and family that needed renovating). Something had to give and sadly, it was us.
ReplyDeleteLooking back, the really key thing was that we barely spoke about it. By the time I got to the point where I said 'let's call it a day' we just agreed and went on our separate ways, sad, exhausted and very bitter.
Fast forward four years, and we were volunteering to clean the church grounds. On that day I remembered how much he had made me smile, how much I had always been utterly at ease in his company. We've now been back together for a couple of years but it's so sad we missed so much time together as a family. I appreciate us more than ever and we both put time and energy into us but my key thing would be to talk through the little things, before it gets too bad. I think if we had just spoken earlier, much of the damage could have been prevented.
