The new administrative assistant

After nearly four months of searching for a job, I finally got one today at 1:48 pm. I was offered a job as an administrative assistant at the Utah College of Dental Hygiene. The president of the school and other faculty made sure I understood I was not merely a receptionist. My job includes many things (all of which are still a little unclear). I will let you know when I figure it out. I start Monday. I will be working 30 hours a week and maybe more when peak times hit. It is the largest dental hygiene school in Utah. I have no interest in teeth except the fact that I am a little OCD about having my teeth cleaned. I would have them cleaned monthly if I could. And that just may be a possibility now. Lori, I know you are reading this...I totally thought of you as they explained the program. I gained a lot more respect for what you do.

Why didn't I choose a teaching career? It wasn't that I didn't want to teach. In fact, I love teaching. It is a passion of mine. However, there have been very few postings in Utah County and I couldn't keep hoping that something would open up in August. Time was flying and I just needed any job. The competition is stiff in this area because there are a billion BYU wives in the same situation as me: husband still finishing school, stuck here for a couple more years. I apply to jobs and before I can say, "Call me," the jobs are taken. I also learned that to get a teaching job in Utah, you must know someone. It is highly political and highly irritating. Since I know no one here, I received no job offers. Don't get me started on this. I have strong feelings about the subject.

So I will pursue my office career. I like working in offices. I am glad I don't have to take my work home. I may even substitute from time to time on my free Fridays. We will see. I do see myself teaching someday, but most likely not in Utah. We will see. For now, I am relieved. I have prayed and prayed to find a job. And this is a great opportunity for me. I know I will learn a lot and will be able to use my Spanish all the time.

Although this is all great, and we are really excited...there is one small problem. We need to find someone or more than one person to watch Mya every Tuesday and Thursday from 8:45-9:50/10 and 3:45-5:15 until August 10th. At that time, we will be finding more permanent childcare. If you know anyone that can help, please let us know. We are willing to pay. It wouldn't be much, but if you know someone who would want a little extra cash, it could be worth it. Let me know a.s.a.p. Thanks for all your support and prayers.

  1. Hey Janine,
Congrats on your new job! I completely understand how hard it is to find someone to watch your kids and since I work mostly in the evenings I would be willing to help out if you wanted. Just let me know. She and Kade can play together!

  3. Yeah for you! That is really exciting. Every office could use a non-receptionist administrative assistant like yourself. You'll proboably go in there, turn the place around, and then have a hard time leaving when the time comes. /sigh/ That's life though.

Can't wait to hear all about it next week!
