"The rap music"

So...Tim drove off this morning with my keys in Mya's diaper bag so I am stuck waiting for a ride for a few minutes. I thought I would take advantage of my extra few minutes...that at the beginning seemed so bothersome but have turned out to be quite delightful...to share a funny story. So our downstairs neighbors moved two weeks ago and new tenants moved in. Tim and I affectionately call them the "geek squad #2" because well, you would have to see it to believe it. They were married two weeks ago and have all the behavior patterns of an awkward teenager. It is really quite sad and comical to watch.

Well, while I was cleaning the house on Saturday, I heard a knock on the door. I had yet to meet them up until that point, I only had the pleasure of observing out of my peek-a-boo side window. I opened the door to meet our new neighbors. They were everything I imagined and more. This is how the conversation went:

I opened the door...
Me: Hi
Them: Silence....silence...Um, hello
Me: You must be our new neighbors
Them: Silence
Me: I am Janine
Them: Silence....We did not hear "the rap music" playing anymore so we didn't know if you were home.
Me: Silence
Them: Well, you are home.
Me: Yes
Them: Well, we just wanted to know when and where church is
Me: Over there at 11 (pointing to the church that is two blocks from our house), but I don't know what time the student married ward meets. A lot of newly married couples like going there.
Them: Oh no, not us.
Me: Ok
Them: Well, see ya later
Me: Um...what are your names
Him: I am ________ and this is __________ (I can't currently remember their names)
Me: Well, thanks for coming
Them: Ok.

The end. Awkward. I barely shut the door and ran upstairs to my bed and started laughing. I thought it was so funny they said "the rap music." I quickly realized they must only listen to hymns or piano music. I personally must have rap music on to clean. Or really to do anything. I like rap music. I know it seems so out of character, but I have my moments where it really seems like the right thing to listen to.

Oh what it would be like to be weird and awkward and newly married. I can only wait to hear their first fight. Sadly we hear everything in this house.

  1. Okay, so I originally read your post this morning and I am still cracking up about it. I'm proud of you for keeping your laughs in until you shut the door and made it to your bedroom. Of all the people to get as neighbors...you're so lucky.
